Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube has announced that a future Unity Fiji government would reduce the salaries of Ministers and members of Parliament and scale back what he described as excessive government spending.

He made the comments during the party’s Annual General Meeting held on 20 November in Vunimono, Nausori.

Narube outlined several key policy intentions, including:

- Cutting the size of Cabinet, which he said is the largest in Fiji’s history.

- Reducing overseas travel allowances, saying the current government had promised to do so but has failed to deliver.

- Limiting the number of ministerial trips abroad.

- Reducing national debt without reducing funding for health, education, or infrastructure.

He criticised what he described as wasteful spending on travel and allowances and warned that it contributes directly to the nation’s growing debt burden.

“When the President, Prime Minister, and Ministers travel abroad frequently, they are not just wasting our money — they are directly increasing the debt that our children will pay,” he said.

Narube also pointed to the government’s delegation to international climate meetings as an example of misplaced priorities.

“When the Government sends sixty people to the COP conference half-way around the world, they are not just going for a ride — they are depriving many villages from building seawalls to protect their lives,” he said.

He stressed that these spending decisions have real impacts on everyday Fijians.

“Don’t make the fatal mistake that I am exaggerating. I am not. What is happening goes well beyond politics — right into our homes, dinner tables, classrooms, and our collective future,” Narube said.

The party also thanked the Soqosoqo Vakamarama of Vunimono for catering the AGM.
