The urban housing crisis is reaching alarming levels, with nearly 25 percent of the urban population residing in over 250 informal settlements nationwide, primarily attributed to a lack of access to affordable housing.

According to the National Development Plan report, many middle-income families are relocating to informal settlements near Suva.

This shift is occurring alongside low-middle-income households, driven by a scarcity of zoned land and high construction costs.

The government is currently evaluating a new grant subsidy designed to help individuals purchase essential, life-sustaining homes.

Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa emphasized the critical need for reform in existing housing policies.

Nalumisa stated, “We are reassessing housing policies based on current data. The existing subsidy for first-time homeowners, set at $30,000 for those earning below $30,000, raises important questions. What about those earning below $50,000 or $60,000? We need to consider those earning up to $80,000 as well. There’s a pressing need to review these policies.”

The Minister assured the public that the government is committed to securing better housing solutions for all Fijians
