The Vodafone Rakiraki Carnival opened last night at the FSC Ground in Rakiraki Town with a strong call for resilience, unity, and community development, marking the start of a week-long celebration under the theme “Rise Above – Building Strong Minds, Bright Futures.”

Speaking as Chief Guest, Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudamu said the theme captures the spirit of the people of Ra and reflects the importance of overcoming challenges through collective strength.

“It speaks not only to overcoming challenges but to empowering our youth, strengthening families, and inspiring communities to dream bigger and strive for better futures,” he said.

Niudamu reminded attendees that the carnival represents more than entertainment, describing it as a platform for civic participation and nation-building.

“It reminds us that progress is not just built in government offices, but also here at home, through our unity, our creativity, and our willingness to uplift one another,” he added.

Vodafone Fiji’s Manager Retail and Dealers, William Tabuya, reflected on the company’s long-standing contribution to community events across the country, noting that Vodafone has supported local carnivals for more than 30 years.

“We have spent the last thirty years building the digital highways that allow students to access crucial educational resources, empower local businesses to thrive and trade globally, and ensure families stay connected,” he said.

Tabuya also encouraged the contestants to make the most of their experience throughout the week.

Carnival Chairperson Sailosi Sawana highlighted the role of the annual event in supporting Rakiraki’s development. He said funds raised last year were used to provide power tools to Rakiraki Town Council workers and CCTV cameras for the Rakiraki Market — improvements he said had already helped recover lost items and maintain public spaces.

Sawana also announced that this year’s proceeds will go towards the beautification of the town as it prepares for the national “Clean Towns and Cities Competition.”

“As we gather to celebrate, let us also remember that the carnival is more than rides and music — it is a platform for unity, for supporting charitable causes, and for empowering our youth,” he said.
