Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Hon. Filimoni Vosarogo has hailed the opening of the Suva Crematorium and Memorial Gardens as a landmark in sustainable urban development and responsible land management.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Minister Vosarogo said, “This facility represents not only a vital public service but also a symbol of how smart land use, innovation, and community needs can align for the greater good.”
The Suva Crematorium is Fiji’s first to incorporate advanced three-stage decarbonisation and wet scrubber systems, setting a new national benchmark in environmentally friendly funeral services.
The adjacent Memorial Gardens offer a peaceful, sustainable alternative to traditional burials, easing pressure on limited urban land.
Acknowledging the emotional and logistical burden often faced by grieving families, the Minister noted, “Land is a finite and sacred resource. This facility demonstrates that we can meet today’s needs without compromising tomorrow’s opportunities.”
He praised the leadership of Suva Funeral Directors Pte Ltd Managing Director Mr. Diven Prasad, and the financial support from the Fiji Development Bank, describing the initiative as “a successful example of public-private collaboration delivering meaningful, community-driven results.”
“This is what progress looks like when the public and private sectors work together—creating value for the community, honouring our traditions, and building for the future,” he said.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting developments that serve public needs while safeguarding the environment.
“We celebrate a new chapter in how we care for our people, our land, and our environment,” the Minister concluded.
