The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO), of which Fiji is a member state, has officially welcomed Indonesia into the region, following its reassignment from the South-East Asia Region.

The announcement was made during the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly, held this week in Geneva. With Indonesia’s inclusion, WPRO now comprises 38 member states and areas, including 27 sovereign nations, 10 administered territories, and Taiwan.

The move has been widely welcomed by Pacific nations, who see Indonesia’s inclusion as a step toward deeper regional cooperation and shared public health progress.

Vanuatu stated that Indonesia’s entry will “bolster and strengthen collaboration amongst us WPRO member states.”

The Philippines highlighted shared health system experiences, saying it looked forward to “a more impactful partnership.”

Papua New Guinea noted both nations’ land border and stated, “We will now share public health outcomes and experiences.”

WPRO Regional Director Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala also welcomed Indonesia and expressed optimism for the country's contributions to public health in the region.
