Women in Construction and Trade (WICAT) successfully hosted events in Nadi and Suva this week to promote greater female participation in male-dominated industries such as construction, plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry.
According to a statement from WICAT, the events brought together industry leaders and women’s organizations to discuss pathways for women in trade.
Hon. Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Sashi Kiran, highlighted the importance of diversity, stating, “We believe that diversity in construction and trade fields can lead to innovation and improved results.” She also stressed the need for support systems that encourage women to enter these fields, ensuring a richer and more inclusive workforce.
The initiative featured workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, equipping women with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the industry.
WICAT founder Julienne Verma encouraged attendees to embrace continuous learning, saying, “Some things we have learnt, we need to unlearn and relearn to become the best versions of ourselves. Stay curious, keep learning, be a doer and most of all, keep going… you got this!”
The events concluded with a networking session where participants connected with potential employers, industry professionals, and organizations offering scholarships, apprenticeships, and mentorship programs for women in trade.
WICAT reported positive feedback from attendees, with growing enthusiasm for its initiatives.
Fletcher Higgins, a Laboratory QA Administrator, noted, “Great achievements start with small steps, and our women in construction are breaking barriers.”
