The FMF Suva Rugby Union Women’s Competition will officially begin next week, marking another major step in what Chairman Maritino Nemani says has been a strong and encouraging season for Suva Rugby.
The women’s teams will contest an intense four-round tournament as part of their preparations for the upcoming Marama Championship, with officials expecting a high standard of competition and strong performances from clubs across the union.
Nemani said the launch of the women’s competition reflects Suva Rugby’s continued push to strengthen the game at all levels.
“We look forward to seeing the same level of grit, talent and commitment from our women’s teams as we have seen throughout our club competition,” he said.
He also acknowledged the support of FMF for backing the local competition, saying the sponsorship has helped revive consistent, high-quality rugby in Suva.
Nemani said the ongoing FMF Club Competition has brought out the best in both players and management, with clubs delivering strong performances week after week.
“This club competition is the heartbeat of Suva Rugby. It is helping create a strong pathway for our provincial selectors and coaches to identify and prepare the best squad to represent Suva,” he said.
He also thanked club executives, players, referees, match commissioners and loyal supporters for helping keep the competition on track.
According to the union’s roadmap, the final round of club games is expected to conclude in mid-June, followed by the Grand Final in the first week of July. After that, Suva Rugby will enter a dedicated three-week preparation window for provincial teams.
Nemani said by the time the Grand Final is played, players would have completed around 14 weeks of competitive rugby, ensuring Suva’s provincial squad is match-fit and ready to defend the union’s pride on the national stage.
