Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Jone Maritino Nemani, is reminding employers that workers who work during the Easter public holidays must be paid double.
Mr Nemani said any worker required to work on Good Friday, Easter Saturday or Easter Monday is legally entitled to double their normal rate of pay.
“If a worker works on a public holiday, they must be paid double,” he said.
He added that workers who do not work on the public holiday may still be entitled to normal pay, provided they have worked their scheduled days immediately before and after the holiday.
Mr Nemani also stressed the importance of honesty and responsibility from workers during the holiday period.
“Workers must be honest if they are unable to attend work before or after a public holiday. Valid reasons or medical certificates must be provided where required,” he said.
He said fairness in the workplace goes both ways, with both employers and workers expected to meet their obligations under the law.
“Understanding and respecting these rules helps maintain trust and avoid unnecessary disputes,” Mr Nemani said.
