A wrecked yacht that washed ashore at Vunikodi Village in Udu Point has been identified as a vessel registered in Papeete, French Polynesia, which was previously reported sunk in May last year.

Authorities confirmed that records show the vessel went down on 26 May 2025 near Moorea Island.

Following the discovery of the wreck, the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and the Republic of Fiji Navy worked together to establish the origins of the craft, coordinating with regional law enforcement authorities.

Information obtained from authorities in French Polynesia indicates the owner had made several attempts to relocate the vessel after it was found overturned in open waters on the day it was reported sunk, including chartering an aircraft to locate it.

Initial assessments by Police and maritime officials suggest the yacht had been drifting at sea for a significant period, with extensive damage observed to its interior.

Investigations are continuing as authorities work to determine how the vessel eventually reached #Fiji waters.
