Year 10 Social Science students and senior History students from Yat Sen Secondary School were today hosted at State House as part of an educational field trip designed to deepen their understanding of Fiji’s governance and national history.

Accompanied by their Principal, Mrs. Raijeli Sikivou, and Head of the Social Science Department, Ms. Vika Savu, the students were warmly received by His Excellency the President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

In addressing the students, President Lalabalavu expressed his encouragement at seeing young people taking an active interest in national affairs.

"It is always heartening to see our future leaders taking the time to learn about our history and governance," he said. "As future leaders, you have a responsibility to learn, to question, and to lead with honesty, compassion, and respect."

During an interactive session, students asked insightful questions regarding the President's constitutional role, including his interaction with the Legislature and Judiciary. President Lalabalavu explained that the Head of State acts only on the advice of the Prime Minister, Ministers, or constitutionally mandated bodies such as the Judicial Service Commission and the Constitutional Offices Commission.

One student asked about his experiences across various leadership roles, including his time as Leader of the Opposition, Speaker of Parliament, and now as Head of State. President Lalabalavu responded by highlighting the unique responsibilities of each position.

"As Speaker, I had to ensure fair and orderly debate in Parliament, rising above political divisions," he said. "Now, as President, I serve as a unifying symbol for all Fijians, above political interests, upholding dignity and impartiality."

The students were also given a guided tour of State House, learning about its history, architectural significance, and enduring role within Fiji’s governance system.

In closing, President Lalabalavu encouraged the students to value their education and to aim high.

"Education opens doors to opportunity and empowers you to contribute meaningfully to our country's development. You are the future of Fiji—lead with integrity," he said.

The field trip was part of Yat Sen Secondary School’s commitment to providing students with experiential learning opportunities that build civic awareness and leadership skills.
