A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong river currents while crossing the Waisomi River with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt.

They were returning from picking edible lady fern when the incident happened. The matter was reported to the Police by the Turaga ni koro of Naituvatuvavatu village.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu stated that three police officers were dispatched to assist in the search yesterday.

However, the search had to be called off due to darkness and unfavorable weather conditions.

The search for the young girl will continue today.

ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of parental supervision, especially during this time of year.

He urged parents to be more responsible and vigilant with their children during the school break and to spend more time with them rather than attending gatherings.
