Fiji FA Pushes for Stronger Football Ties With Australia

The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) is seeking to expand football cooperation between Fiji and Australia through the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Union Treaty.

Fiji FA Vice President Naziah Ali presented the Association’s proposals to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, outlining ways football could contribute to closer ties between the two countries.

The Association is calling for more opportunities for Fijian players, coaches, referees and administrators to gain experience in Australia.

It also wants greater investment and cooperation in women’s football, youth development, club partnerships and football academies.

Fiji FA believes football should have a stronger presence in the Vuvale Union Work Plan and wants to participate in programmes and discussions focused on developing the sport.

Ali highlighted Bula FC’s participation in the OFC Professional League as an important opportunity to establish stronger professional football pathways between Fiji and Australia.

“Football connects young people, communities, players, coaches and institutions across borders,” Ali said.

She said Bula FC could provide a platform for Fijian players and football officials to gain valuable professional experience while strengthening links with Australia’s football community.

Fiji FA also highlighted the sporting relationship between the two countries through teams such as the Fijian Drua and Fijiana Drua, saying football can build on those existing connections.

The Association will now prepare and submit a written proposal to the Parliamentary Committee outlining how football can contribute to the Vuvale Union and support the long-term growth of the sport in Fiji.
