US Research Vessel Okeanos Explorer Supports Deep-Sea Mapping in Fiji

Members of the media have been given an opportunity to board the NOAA Ocean Exploration vessel Okeanos Explorer to learn more about its scientific mission in Fiji and the wider Pacific.

The vessel is undertaking scientific exploration and seafloor mapping, with the work expected to contribute to a better understanding of Fiji’s deep-ocean environment and support regional marine research.

During the media visit, US Chargé d’Affaires Christina Cavallo highlighted the importance of transparency in ocean scientific research and sharing information with Pacific partners.

She said the United States supports making scientific information available to help countries make informed decisions about the management and protection of their marine resources.

The Okeanos Explorer’s mission forms part of broader efforts to improve knowledge of the deep ocean, including areas that remain relatively unexplored.

The research and mapping activities are expected to provide valuable information for Fiji and other Pacific countries as they continue efforts to understand and sustainably manage their ocean resources.

The mission also highlights continued cooperation between Fiji and the United States in scientific research, ocean exploration and marine resource management.
