Fiji President Urges World Leaders to Deliver on Climate Commitments

Fiji President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has called for stronger global action on climate change, urging world leaders to provide firm commitments, accessible climate finance and measurable results for vulnerable Pacific nations.

Speaking at a high-level Climate Action and Just Transition event held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, President Lalabalavu highlighted the growing impact of climate change on Fiji and other Pacific island countries.

He said climate change is already affecting food security, livelihoods and coastal communities, warning that even a small rise in global temperatures could have significant consequences for Pacific peoples.

The President called for stronger national climate plans aligned with the 1.5°C target and climate financing that can be accessed by small island developing states.

He also urged greater investment in practical adaptation measures, including coastal protection, secure food supplies and access to safe water.

President Lalabalavu invited global leaders to visit Pacific communities and witness firsthand the challenges they face from rising seas and the changing climate.

“The people of the Pacific are not asking for sympathy. We are asking for performance,” he said.

He stressed that Pacific nations remain committed to working with the international community but want global climate promises to be matched by concrete and measurable action.
