Police Commissioner Urges Public to Avoid Spreading Unverified Claims Online
Fiji’s Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu is urging members of the public to exercise caution when making accusations and sharing information on social media, particularly while police investigations are underway.
Tudravu said while public calls for quick investigations and answers are understandable, investigations must be conducted within the law and established legal processes.
He said the Fiji Police Force accepts criticism, but deliberate misinformation intended to mislead or cause harm will not be tolerated.
The Commissioner also warned against maligning individuals without evidence, saying social media is increasingly being used to target officials and individuals.
He urged Fijians to allow investigators to carry out their work and stressed that accountability must ultimately be determined through the courts.
“We all want answers. We are working around the clock to get those answers and those involved. Please allow Police to conduct the investigations,” Tudravu said.
