President Lalabalavu Calls for Peace, Climate Action and UN Reform at UNGA81

Fiji President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has delivered Fiji’s national statement at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, making his first appearance at the UNGA as Head of State.

Addressing world leaders, President Lalabalavu called for greater respect for international law, peaceful dialogue and stronger multilateral cooperation as global conflicts and geopolitical tensions continue to rise.

He also highlighted the Pacific’s vision of an “Ocean of Peace”, saying the region welcomes genuine partnerships but should not become an arena for competition between major powers.

The President raised a number of issues affecting Fiji and the Pacific, including the constitutional review, truth and reconciliation, the HIV emergency, transnational drug trafficking and costly remittance services.

He also highlighted concerns over overseas recruitment and its impact on Fiji’s health and education workforce.

Climate change and ocean protection were central to Fiji’s message, with President Lalabalavu urging the international community to translate climate commitments into accessible financing and measurable action for vulnerable communities.

He further called for reforms within the United Nations to better address the realities faced by small island states.

President Lalabalavu reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to peace, human dignity and regional security, while calling for a stronger global partnership that ensures Pacific voices are heard.
