President Ratu Naiqama Pays Tribute to 9/11 Victims in New York

Fiji’s Head of State, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks during a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York.

The visit followed the President’s attendance at the opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

President Lalabalavu was accompanied by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Filipo Tarakinikini, Military and Police Adviser Colonel Daunivakasala Ravunakana, and members of the Fijian delegation.

During the visit, President Lalabalavu laid a wreath at the Survivor Tree on behalf of the Government and people of Fiji.

The Callery pear tree was discovered among the wreckage following the September 11 attacks. Despite suffering severe fire damage, it survived and has become an enduring symbol of resilience, survival and hope.

The President also toured the museum, where he viewed wreckage and other artefacts recovered following the attacks.

The September 11 attacks targeted the World Trade Center in New York and other locations in the United States, killing nearly 3,000 people.

President Lalabalavu’s visit formed part of his engagements in New York during Fiji’s participation in UNGA81.
