Tui Nayau Urges Parliament to Delay Vote on Major International Agreements

Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara is calling on Parliament to withhold approval of two major international agreements until Fiji obtains independent legal advice and allows for wider public and Vanua consultation.

Ratu Tevita is seeking further scrutiny of the proposed Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union and the Ocean of Peace Alliance, also known as the Veitacini Treaty.

Speaking in his capacity as Tui Nayau and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, Ratu Tevita said the agreements were significant commitments that should be fully examined before Fiji proceeds.

He has also called for the Bose Levu Vakaturaga to convene to consider the proposed agreements and their implications for Fiji.

Ratu Tevita said independent legal advice was necessary to provide clarity on the agreements, while the public and Vanua should have an opportunity to understand and assess their potential impact.

He said greater consultation would help ensure that any decision taken by Parliament was properly informed and reflected Fiji’s national interests.

The call comes as the proposed agreements undergo consideration, with Ratu Tevita urging caution before Parliament makes any final decision.
