Nasawana Women’s Group Receives Support for Oyster Farming

The Ministry of Fisheries Pearl Team has completed a week of field activities in Nasawana, Bua, supporting local marine cultivation and strengthening community participation in oyster and pearl farming.

The team began its visit with a traditional sevusevu ceremony with the village, marking the start of its engagement with the community.

Following the ceremony, fisheries officers prepared equipment and measured 100-metre lines before successfully deploying 12 spat collector lines for the Nasawana Women’s Group.

The team also carried out work to monitor and care for existing oyster stocks, helping support their continued growth and development.

The activities are aimed at strengthening sustainable marine cultivation while providing coastal communities with opportunities to develop fisheries-based livelihoods.

The field work also highlights the importance of partnerships between fisheries officers and local communities in developing Fiji’s marine resources and supporting sustainable economic opportunities.
