MSAF Warns Mariners to Follow Weather Advisories After Vessel Capsizes

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has issued a strong warning to vessel operators and members of the public to follow weather advisories after three mariners were rescued following a vessel capsizing in Fiji waters.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 20 September, when the vessel Amani Wai capsized. All three mariners were safely recovered following a rescue operation by the Salmar crew.

MSAF commended the Salmar crew for their swift response but said the incident highlights the dangers of travelling at sea during adverse weather conditions.

The authority is urging shipmasters, boat owners, small-craft operators and fishermen to check the latest marine forecasts and weather warnings before departing.

MSAF said vessels should not put to sea when strong wind warnings or heavy sea advisories are in force, while non-essential trips should be postponed during periods of rough or unpredictable conditions.

Operators are also reminded to ensure vessels carry functional lifejackets for every person on board, distress signals and reliable communication equipment.

MSAF stressed that maritime safety is a shared responsibility and warned that ignoring weather warnings can put lives at risk.

The authority is calling on all maritime users to exercise caution and make safety their priority when planning any journey at sea.
