Government Boosts Support for Cane Growers
The Government is providing additional support to cane growers as rising fertiliser and fuel costs continue to pressure Fiji’s sugar industry.
Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna said the Government subsidises $43.34 of the $63.34 cost of a bag of fertiliser, covering about 68 percent of the price.
A $5 million fuel subsidy has also been provided for the 2026 harvesting season across the Lautoka, Rarawai and Labasa mill areas.
As of September 21, about $4.386 million had been spent under the programme, supporting harvesting, transportation and other sugar operations.
Tunabuna said the measures aim to reduce production costs and strengthen the sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry.
