Bala Demands Action Against FTA General Secretary Over Racist Remarks

Bala Demands Action Against FTA General Secretary Over Racist Remarks

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Parveen Kumar Bala has called for Police action against Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) General Secretary Paula Manumanunitoga over his racially inflammatory social media remarks.

Bala expressed concern that comments made by a small group of troublemakers on social media had been used to portray an entire ethnic community negatively, stressing that the actions of a few should never be attributed to thousands of innocent Fijians.

In a statement issued today, Bala said condemnation alone was insufficient and those responsible must face consequences.

“Teachers are among the most trusted people in our society. For generations, the iTaukei, Indo-Fijian, Rotuman, Chinese, Pacific Islander and other children of this country have learned to be Fijians together because teachers insisted on fairness, dignity and respect.”

Bala said such remarks betray the teaching profession and undermine the efforts of thousands of teachers who promote unity.

He also defended Fiji’s traditional chiefs, saying they represent all Fijians and would never endorse such remarks being made on their behalf.

The Deputy Opposition Leader called for a prompt Police investigation and prosecution if the evidence supports criminal charges.

He demanded that the FTA publicly explain its position and what disciplinary action would follow, while urging the Ministry of Education to uphold professional standards.

Bala also questioned the Online Safety Commission’s response.

“If the Commission cannot or will not act in such a clear case, Fijians are entitled to ask what it is for.”

He endorsed Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu’s condemnation of racial hostility, stressing that the law must apply equally to everyone.

His statement follows Manumanunitoga’s public apology to the Indo-Fijian community, in which he maintained that his remarks were retaliation for alleged insults directed at Fiji’s traditional chiefs.

The National Federation Party also lodged a formal Police complaint against Manumanunitoga earlier today.
