Kavewa Women Receive New Boat to Strengthen Sustainable Fisheries

The Cagimaiwai Women’s Cooperative on Kavewa Island has received a new boat and outboard engine to support economic activities, safer transportation and sustainable fisheries.

The equipment was handed over by Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu during a community event in Nadogo, Macuata.

The cooperative was established by 27 women who have been working with community leaders, fishers and young people to strengthen livelihoods and marine resource management.

The new boat is expected to improve transportation for members and make it easier to take fresh fish and other products to market.

The investment will also complement existing community initiatives, including a solar-powered freezer and community canteen, supporting the cooperative’s efforts to build greater financial independence and food security.

Cooperative Chair Sulueti Dimaisavuna said the boat fulfilled a long-standing request and would serve as an important economic asset for local families.

The initiative reflects the community’s commitment to sustainable fisheries, women’s economic empowerment and marine conservation, while strengthening resilience among families on Kavewa Island.

The handover was also marked by a traditional celebration, with the women performing a specially composed song to commemorate the milestone.
