Motorists Urged to Give Way to Emergency Vehicles
The Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) is calling on motorists to give way safely to ambulances, fire engines, Police vehicles and other emergency responders when their sirens or emergency lights are activated.
ACCF Executive Chairman Maritino Nemani said even a few seconds of delay could make a difference in an emergency.
“When you hear a siren or see emergency lights approaching, safely move aside and give way. The emergency vehicle may be responding to someone who is seriously injured, a fire, an accident or another situation where every second counts,” Mr Nemani said.
He urged drivers to remain calm, check their surroundings and avoid sudden or dangerous movements when making way for emergency vehicles.
Motorists have also been warned against following closely behind emergency vehicles to bypass traffic.
“None of us knows who is inside that ambulance or who the Police or firefighters are rushing to assist. Tomorrow, it could be someone from our own family,” Mr Nemani said.
He stressed that road safety was everyone’s responsibility and that giving way to emergency responders could help save lives.
“Our message is simple: hear the siren, check your surroundings, move aside safely and let them through.”
