Nemani condemns continued drink-driving
Accident Compensation Commission Fiji Executive Chairman Jone Maritino Nemani has expressed frustration over motorists continuing to drink and drive despite repeated warnings about the dangers.
His comments follow a road accident in Nalawa on 31 October in which four people escaped with their lives.
According to police, a 37-year-old driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. All four occupants, believed to have been intoxicated, were taken to a nearby health centre for treatment.
Nemani said motorists who ignored warnings were putting themselves and innocent road users at risk.
“Time and time again, we remind people not to drink and drive. Yet some continue to ignore these warnings, putting not only their own lives at risk but also the lives of innocent road users and entire families.”
He said the consequences could extend well beyond those involved in a crash, leaving families facing grief, permanent disabilities and financial hardship.
“One person’s irresponsible decision can leave an innocent family grieving for the rest of their lives,” he said.
Nemani urged motorists to arrange alternative transport if they planned to consume alcohol.
“The message has not changed. If you drink, do not drive. What needs to change is people’s willingness to listen.”
