Vosarogo confirms fireworks allowed until midnight on Diwali

Fireworks can be lit from 5pm to midnight on Diwali, Sunday, 8 November, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo has confirmed.

On the days leading up to Diwali and on the Monday, 9 November public holiday, fireworks are permitted only from 5pm to 10pm.

Vosarogo said lighting fireworks outside the permitted hours, making or using homemade fireworks such as bamboo guns, or selling fireworks to anyone under 18 could carry a fine of up to $400 or up to six months in prison.

The ministry has licensed 113 retailers nationwide, with 47 in the Western Division, 46 in the Central Division and 20 in the Northern Division. Retailers must display their licences and store and sell fireworks at approved premises.

With El Niño bringing dry conditions, Vosarogo urged families to take extra care. Authorities advise lighting fireworks in open spaces away from people, animals, vehicles and buildings. Keep children at a safe distance, have water or a fire extinguisher nearby and never try to relight a firework that fails to go off.

“This Diwali, let’s celebrate the triumph of light over darkness with joy and responsibility,” Vosarogo said.
