Taiwan and Fiji Mark 55 Years of Partnership
Taiwan’s longstanding cooperation with Fiji in agriculture, healthcare and education was celebrated at a National Day reception in Suva on October 8.
Taipei Trade Office Representative David Cheng-Wei Wu hosted the reception to mark the 115th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan), highlighting 55 years of partnership with Fiji.
Wu said Taiwan had maintained a presence in Suva since 1971, with practical cooperation and exchanges between people helping build lasting friendships.
“Taiwan and Fiji were simply born to be good mates,” he said, noting that both celebrate their national days on October 10.
Former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry also addressed the gathering, praising Taiwan’s contribution to Fiji’s development. He said the partnership went beyond providing equipment and resources, helping local people gain the skills and knowledge needed for sustainable development.
Chaudhry highlighted the Taiwan Technical Mission’s work with Fiji since 1978, including farmer training, demonstration farms and support for crop production.
He said cooperation with Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture had produced more than 15,000 guava seedlings and 16,000 dragon fruit seedlings.
A five-year white shrimp industry project, running from 2026 to 2030, was also highlighted. It aims to strengthen supplies of shrimp fry and feed, train farmers and encourage private investment.
In healthcare, Chaudhry acknowledged a team from Taiwan’s Mackay Memorial Hospital that provided free medical services at Nadi Hospital in September. An infectious disease specialist joined the team for the first time to support Fiji’s response to HIV and share expertise with local health professionals.
Wu said Taiwan would continue working with Fiji and other Pacific partners to support development and strengthen regional resilience.
