Constitution Bill Failure Could Break Up Coalition, Says Rabuka
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says failure to pass the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026 could lead to the breakup of the Coalition Government, with its political parties contesting the next general election independently.
Rabuka made the comments following public consultations on the Bill in Savusavu, responding to media questions about SODELPA’s decision not to support its third reading.
He said the loss of support could prevent the Bill from securing the required majority, bringing the constitutional amendment process to a halt.
Rabuka said there would be no referendum if the Bill failed, but the general election would still go ahead.
He indicated that the political fallout could also lead to the dismantling of the Coalition Government, with its member parties going their separate ways into the election.
