Fiji to establish first national alcohol and drug recovery centre

Fiji’s first National Alcohol and Drug Recovery Centre will be established in Tamavua with support from a US$10 million grant from the Republic of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has signed a Record of Discussions with KOICA for the project, which will be supported over six years.

Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services Dr. Aalisha Sahu Khan said families had long faced challenges related to substance use without a dedicated national rehabilitation facility.

“While St Giles Hospital provides incredible care, space and specialized resources remain limited,” she said.

Dr. Sahu Khan said the project would provide advanced medical equipment and specialised healthcare training to strengthen recovery services.

She said the support was intended to reach people across Fiji, including those in remote maritime and rural communities.

Dr. Sahu Khan acknowledged KOICA Country Director Ms. Han Kyul Sam Cho and her team for their partnership.

“Together, we are building a place of hope, healing, and second chances,” she said.
