Trump and Republicans Suffer Crushing Defeat in US Midterm Elections
US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party have suffered a major defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, with Democrats projected to take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The results represent a major political setback for Trump, whose Republican Party entered the elections controlling both chambers of Congress.
Democrats secured victories in several traditionally Republican states, including Texas, South Carolina and Ohio, signalling a significant shift in voter support.
Among the notable defeats was Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who lost the Ohio governor’s race to Democrat Amy Acton.
The results mean Trump could face a much more difficult final two years in office, with Democrats gaining the power to block legislation, investigate his administration and challenge key government policies.
Democratic control of the House would also open the possibility of fresh impeachment proceedings against Trump, although removing him from office would still require a two-thirds majority in the Senate.
The elections were widely seen as a test of public confidence in Trump’s second administration, with economic concerns and US foreign policy among the issues facing voters.
The newly elected Congress will take office in January 2027.
