Government Cannot Fight HIV Crisis Alone
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on all Fijians to take personal responsibility in combating Fiji’s HIV crisis, stressing that Government cannot tackle the growing public health challenge alone.
In a statement on his official Facebook page, Rabuka said an estimated one in every 60 adults in Fiji is living with HIV, describing the situation as a serious national public health challenge.
He said Government was already providing extensive awareness programmes, education, testing, treatment and access to protection, but individuals must also take responsibility for their own safety.
“Government cannot come into your homes and take those safety precautions for you,” Rabuka said.
The Prime Minister stressed that addressing the crisis required the collective efforts of individuals, families and communities.
He urged Fijians to practise safe sex, get tested, make responsible decisions and treat people living with HIV with dignity and compassion.
Rabuka said every Fijian had a responsibility to protect not only themselves but also their families, communities and fellow citizens.
“Government is doing its part. We must all do ours,” he said.
