Nacanieli Waqa Appointed New Biosecurity Authority CEO
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has appointed Nacanieli Waqa as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective 21 October 2026.
The appointment follows a competitive recruitment process and was formally gazetted in accordance with the Biosecurity Act 2008.
Waqa brings more than 34 years of experience in biosecurity, regulatory systems and international trade facilitation, having previously held senior roles with New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries, the Pacific Community (SPC) and Fiji Quarantine and Inspection Service.
BAF Board Chairman Uraia Waibuta welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in Waqa’s ability to strengthen the Authority’s operations, accountability and service delivery.
Waqa said biosecurity played a critical role in protecting Fiji’s farmers, food security and natural resources.
“Biosecurity protects more than our borders, it safeguards the livelihoods of our farmers, the food on our tables and the natural resources our communities depend on,” he said.
He pledged to work closely with stakeholders and the public to build a safer and more resilient Fiji.
