No Mining Licences Issued for Sigatoka
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo has clarified that no mining licences have been issued for the proposed Sigatoka Iron Sands Project, with only exploration activities permitted at this stage.
The clarification comes amid growing rumours, misinformation and sensationalised social media reports which appear to be aimed at generating views and reactions.
Vosarogo said there was an important distinction between an exploration licence, which allows companies to investigate potential mineral deposits, and a mining licence, which permits actual extraction.
He stressed that no mining activities had been approved for the proposed project.
The Minister also urged those opposing the project to participate in the formal public consultation process rather than limiting their objections to social media.
He said only seven written submissions had been received despite the considerable public discussion surrounding the project.
Vosarogo encouraged concerned landowners, residents and members of the public to make their views known through the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) review process.
The proposed project has attracted concerns over its potential environmental impact, particularly on the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, surrounding communities and livelihoods.
The Minister explained that any application for a mining licence would have to undergo the required regulatory processes, including environmental assessments, before approval could be considered.
Members of the public have until 30 October 2026 to submit their views on the proposed project.
