Taxi Association Backs Nemani’s Call for Illegal Taxi Crackdown
The Fiji Taxi Association has backed Maritino Nemani’s call for stronger enforcement against illegal taxi operators, citing concerns about passenger safety and unfair competition.
Association President Mohammed Faiyaz said the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji Executive Chairman had rightly highlighted the risks associated with unlicensed passenger transport, particularly allegations of provisional licence holders carrying paying passengers.
He said licensed taxi operators paid for permits, inspections, insurance and vehicle maintenance while competing against operators allegedly bypassing those requirements.
“An illegal taxi does not become legal simply because someone books it through a mobile application,” Faiyaz said.
The association called on the Land Transport Authority and Fiji Police Force to conduct sustained enforcement operations, investigate allegedly unauthorised transport applications and strengthen protection for taxi drivers.
“We are simply demanding that the laws of Fiji be enforced equally and consistently,” Faiyaz said.
